Okay...so I was reading about this new beauty trend called No Poo. It's the idea that the daily shampoos we use are unnecessary, harsh, and strip the essential oils from our hair,...which we then try to add back in by using conditioners, styling products, etc. Plus then your hair over produces oil to make up for what you took out, and your hair ends up limp or greasy or whatever hair issue you have. You can use other products like baking soda, dry shampoo, etc but not bottled shampoo.
The theory is that if you stop using shampoo, only use hot water, and conditioner...after a few weeks to a few months, your hair will return to normalcy and be in great shape, because its natural.
Sooooo....I thought I'd test it out. Do a little research and self sacrifice for my HH girls. lol. I read that the founder of the No Poo movement hasnt washed her hair in 20 years.....
I shower twice a day, once in the morning, once before bed....
Day One (Thursday night)...had shampood that morning, so started No Poo during PM shower. Hair looks great.
Day Two (Friday) No Poo in AM. Hair looks great but feels like I need to wash it by PM. PM Shower...no Poo...hair looks great.
Day Three (Saturday) No Poo in Am. Hair looks okay, not great. I told staff at work about the No Poo thing. They are all teasing me about my eventual dreads. Not gonna happen. lol. One server goes and finds a journal book called the Poo Log at B&N. It's actually about BMs, and has drawings of toilets on the cover...nice.....my staff decides that THEY will decide and record the condition of my hair each day and record it there. Great....By end of day...still looks ok but feels a bit ewwwy behind the scenes....gonna go take my PM shower now....
Feel free to add your thoughts to my No Poo Journal or join in my experiment!
You should also put in your journal brushing your hair produces more oil...so using your fingers to comb your hair you will actually "shed" less. And since I have natural curly hair using a brush is painful..Ever see Orphan Annie?? I won't join you on the No POO thing since I can only wash my hair at max twice a week anyway..

This is pretty interesting, I kinda do something similiar.....
I have naturally curly hair, around mid back length, and it tends to frizzzzzzzzz!
I wash my hair almost daily, because brushing my hair is a no no, and the only way to fix it, is to wash it. I use Shampoo and conditioner on Monday, and the rest of the week I just use conditioner when I wash it is the mornings, and it tends to frizz a lot less....but after about 4 or 5 days of it, I feel like I HAVE to wash with Shampoo, and Mousse (which I use EVERYDAY, to help the curls and the frizz) tends to feel "built up".
But my hair definitely does better with Weekly Shampoos, and daily conditioner washes, than washing it everyday with both.
I am very interested to see how this comes out for you.......
I was wondering if you were going to use any of the dry products you mentioned?
Also, I'm a celeb gossip geek, so this reminded me that I had read the Jessica Simpson doesn't wash her hair under the advisement of her hairdresser. I went back to check out the stories, and they say she washes her hair 2-3 times a month. I may not love the girl, but she does have a great mane. Of course, some stories say this is just rumor. It also added that sometimes her hair/scalp smells foul. This would concern me more that the droopy hair as it adjusted to going unwashed. I don't think I would feel attractive trying to cover my stench with perfume! LOL!
I'm quite curious to hear more about your experiment. I love the co-workers take on the idea (though they need to be more supportive).
lol Joeswife...my staff are all college kids....supportive isnt in their dictionary....having fun with me is more their style. I play around and joke with them a lot, so they have to get me back.
You are allowed to use anything that isn't bottled commercial shampoo....like you could use raw eggs, mayonaisse, etc. The recommended method is to take a tablespoon of baking soda mixed with a cup of water and scrub it into your scalp, then condition with apple cider vinegar...but I dont want to smell like a vinaigrette.
So I'm doing the second method, just hot water and a thinned out conditioner rinse (I just added water to a bottle of Fructis conditioner I already had).
I guess I should also clarify my hair type...I'm a white girl with shoulder length brunette hair, (cuz I'm letting it grow out again), and it's combo...tends to feel normal to oily certain days, dry and static-y the next...
The No Poo idea is to normalize hair like mine, but supposedly works for every hair style, including dry/curly/frizzy.
I've also always used the best shampoos like Redken, etc. that you find in a salon. My stylist actually told me these are the harshest shampoos....thats why your hair feels so clean and great when you leave there....however its not good for long term use. She said Pantene is the worst, because it has bees wax that eventually builds up...and that Clairol Herbal Essense is the best as far as it has the least amount of chemicals....plus its cheap...so go figure.
Just a thought I had to pass on...Most people believe a shampoo needs to lather(make bubbles to clean hair, the more the better) but to be truthful SOME shampoos that lather can damage your hair. Lather means more soap product in the shampoo...more soap means drier hair plus maybe split ends and breakage. Most shampoos recommend shampooing twice (rinse, repeat)but I find depending on shampoo really strips my hair.
Right now I am loving Clairol Herbal Essences but then I change shampoo regularly depending on how my hair is looking and feeling.
I don't use any products or blow dry my hair so my hair has no stress and is too blessed healthy.

Day 3 PM (Saturday night)..fell asleep on couch without shower.
Day 4 AM (Sunday). Woke up when Darby jumped on my head! Grrrr. Could this be a sign? Hair looks good, doesnt feel good near scalp. I just read online how your hair will get worst before it gets better, because it will take a while for your skin to realize you aren't abusing it anymore, and therefore is still over producing natural oil.
I hope this works. The deadline is May 24th because I have another audit and business meeting, more talk from boss about future promotion possibility. And my hair WILL look great regardless of what I have to do!! *takes expensive clarifying shampoo back out of trash* lol.
Day 4 PM....hair not looking that great, feels considerably more Eeeewy! God do I want to shampoo my hair....seriously....really....hold me back....somebody hide my shampoo.....no. Go to sleep.
Day 5 AM Hair looks good on top....I used a blow dryer...but um, something isnt feeling good along the scalp....I have a feeling.....
Day 5 PM (12 am) I have to shampoo....no, no, go to bed...not sleepy.....grrrr... (1 am) I can't stand it......I'm gonna give in....no, go watch National Geographic Taboos. (2 am) Oh my god, those people in Vietnam are eating cats and dogs! (3 am) Seriously...what is this infomercial about? *switch channels* (4 am) Is it hot in here or is it just my scalp? Can't sleep! (5 am) I.....can't....stand.....it.....any.....longer......MUST SHAMPOO!!!
*splish splash in the bath* *squirt, lather, suds, suds, suds, rinse*
AAaaaaaAAAAaaaaaAAAhhhhhHHHHHhhhhhh that feels MUCH better!
Well now. That didn't last long did it? God, I wonder how that No Poo founder has lasted 20 years!!!!
Relieved that it is about hair. My poor hair would love a break. Don't think I could do the no shampoo thing. If I go more than a day without shampooing it feels too oily. Can't stand that. I get my hair done every 4-6 weeks, shampoo & condition atleast 6 times a week, blow dry almost daily and straighten about 3 times a week. Eeekk. I have really thick straight hair that reaches the middle of my back. I also use a deep conditioner once or twice a month since the ends of my hair are dry.
Never heard about the Pantene thing. I may have to try the Herbal Essences.

Neat thread, and it does work. I've been doing something like this for years. I have really long hair and its a little curly, and I totally get the frizz thing someone mentioned. I also have very dry skin so oily hair is something I can only wish for, and yes, your natural oil is the best thing for your hair. I wash my hair as little as possible with a mild shampoo, Herbal Essence is great and smells wonderful! I condition my hair often, but if I can, i try not to even wet it if possible as even just plain hot water will strip away oils. I'm always doing whatever I can to keep my hair clean just because I don't want to wash it. Today is Tuesday and the last time my hair was washed was Saturday morning, I haven't even wet it since Saturday. I should say though that for those 4 days I have kept it all pinned up in a little "bun", which helps keep it from picking up other smells and such. Tonight I will probably wet it and condition it, no shampoo though, maybe next time.
